Here's My Story and I'm Sticking To It!
Golfers always remember their first hole-in-one. Mine happened at Merry-Hill Golf Course long before I became the course owner.
It was a cold and windy Mother's day in the mid-seventies, not really fit weather for golfing. I was joined that day, on the White Nine, number 8, par 3, 187 yards, by my wife Fran and oldest son Al, who was 14 years old then and demonstrating a keen talent for the game.
I remember hitting a three wood into a strong wind and uphill to a back left pin location. Fran & Al had already hit their shots a little more than half way to the green. I also remember Fran, wearing shorts on that blustery day, her legs bright red from the cold. She had not been anxious to play at all, but it was Mother's Day after all, and we were braving the elements!
My tee shot had been hit with a low draw, and it rolled onto the front of the green and over a shallow rise, towards the pin. We knew it was a good shot but couldn't see it finish.
Fran & Al hit their second shots onto the green and we trudged up the fairway together to see where my shot had ended up.... But it was nowhere in sight!
Voila! You guessed it! There it was, nestled firmly at the bottom of the cup, followed by a wide-eyed happy handshake from Al and a big hug from "Mother"!
Our first hold-in-one, with the family as a witness, was certainly a Mother's Day to remember. Here's to you, the reader... may you experience a similar and unexpected thrill to brighten your life's golfing experience.
