    2021 Junior Club Championship

Tournament Recap

The 2021 Junior Club Championship was a very successful event hosted at Merry-Hill Golf Club on September 11, 2021.

There was tough competition on the course on Saturday for all six divisions! The Junior Club Championship was open to any golfer aged 17 and under who had played a minimum of 3 rounds at Merry-Hill Golf Club in 2021, or anyone who had participated in one of our junior golf programs this season. The Club Championship Division (co-ed) and the Competitive Divisions (boys and girls) were both 18-hole events playing our rotation of Blue-White courses. The Championship group played from the back tees while the Competitive players teed it up on the forward tees. The Recreational Divisions (boys and girls) completed 9 holes on the red course, playing from the forward tees, and the Learn to Compete Division played a 9-hole scramble also on the red course. This program introduces new players to tournament golf in a fun and rewarding experience, and challenges our elite players and junior members who crave being titled the Merry-Hill Golf Club Junior Club Champion!

The sun was shining when the first groups teed off at 9:00 am, but by the early afternoon, the wind speeds picked up and created tough conditions for the Competitive and Championship divisions to complete their rounds. Through the front nine for the Championship Division, the leader was Jordan Bauman with a 36 on the blue nine, one shot ahead of Justin Hawke and Ryan Bordon both of which were sitting at a score of 37. As the conditions changed and the winds increased, all participants were forced to take their games up a notch. Most prevailed!

With an impressive score of 33 on the back nine, long-time Junior Member Eddie McDonald took the lead and tapped in on 18 with a par, scoring an impressive 71 to finally take home the title of Junior Club Champion! Justin Hawke, a friend of Eddie’s and another long-term junior member at Merry-Hill Golf Club, kept his game strong throughout the entire round, finishing with another impressive round of 72, just one stroke off the lead!

The Girls Competitive division saw a tie between Ava Asplen and Kaylee Kulkeras the girls made their turn. Both regular players at Merry-Hill Golf Club, and long-time Junior League players, knew the competition would be tough on the back. Ava and Kaylee have gone head-to-head the past few years at this tournament, so no one knew who would come out on top this season! With her regular practice and training with Coach Carly, Ava’s mental focus stayed sharp and she took the lead, winner her division for the first time in three years.

Meanwhile, in the Boys Competitive division, the defending champion from 2020 Ethan Fluit had a 3 shot lead after 9 holes, shooting an impressive score of 36 on the Blue Nine. Logan Monachanwas tight on his heels at 39 and had great momentum going onto the back nine after crushing (and winning!) the long drive competition on nine blue by nearly driving the green! In the end, Ethan was able to maintain his focus and finished with a very consistent round, shooting 36-32 for a total score of 68.

Over on the Red Course, the Recreational Divisions and the Learn to Compete Division was sinking 30-foot putts and hitting fairways all morning long! With 17 players in the Recreational Division, the competition was strong! In the Boys Division, the top four players finished with scores of 44, 45, 46, and 47 going to show that you can never give up on your game until your very last putt drops in the cup! Spencer Gerth, a first-time participant, won his division with a score of 44, with Stewart Coyne, Keiran Nelson and Calvin Chang-Kue tight on his heels.

In the Girls Division, another first-time participant Kinsley Roberts won her division with a score of 53, followed closely by Addison Sandham who finished with a score of 55.

The Learn to Compete Division finished up the tournament on the Red Nine with Enoch Carroll and Syndey Knapp. These two beginner golfers had no fear as they stepped onto each tee and set their goal to have a fun day! And that’s exactly what happened for them. With Grandpa as their caddy, they made their way around the red nine playing a scramble and left for home with a participation medal!

A note from Coach Carly: “On behalf of the entire team at Merry-Hill Golf Club, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every participant this past weekend for coming out and playing. These events would not be what they are if you didn’t have the courage to compete! Every opportunity a junior golfer has to play and experience challenges on the golf course creates a unique opportunity for them to grow and learn about themselves. I am extremely proud of you all for participating, and am very happy to congratulate all the winners of 2021!”
